My Journey That Led to Phenom People: A Marketing Intern's Story

Sometimes all it takes is a crazy thought and an ambitious goal to start you off. Mine? Move seven hours away, back to Pennsylvania, Philadelphia to be exact, seeking a summer internship.

College

I currently attend Virginia Tech, and will be entering my junior year pursuing a major in Marketing Management with double minors in International Business and Political Science.

Increasing brand awareness and social media are two subjects that have always sparked my interest and drive since I was in high school. So marketing was a seamless transition that simply fit with my desires. But when I got to college, I quickly realized that I didn’t really know what “real-world marketing,” was, or at least that’s what I called it.

So, I joined a student-run advertising agency at school, PRISM, and set out to find out just what this term “marketing” really meant. At PRISM, I get to work on clients’ real-world projects with different teams from social media to account management. This experience further piqued my interest and passion for the marketing industry.

Now, Phenom People

Okay, so how did I end up here? Well, I decided that I wanted to move back to Pennsylvania about a year ago. In January, I started applying to anything and everything that was near Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the application process was a lot harder than I thought. I had some relevant working experience and was actively working on my degree. Yet I was running into two major roadblocks; my application was completely disregarded without any communication of its status and I was being siloed into social media positions when I really wanted to expand and get my hands dirty in all marketing’s facets.

Then, came a post on the Virginia Tech Parents Facebook Page that my mom sent my direction. It said that a company was hiring in the Philadelphia area for Marketing Interns. So I sent my application, completed a video interview explaining why I was #NotNormal, and did research on this company that couldn’t have been a better fit.

Was this it? I had talked about moving before but now this was getting real.

Okay, I was gonna do it! I accepted the offer as Marketing Intern with Phenom People and moved back to the City of Brotherly Love.

After my first day at Phenom People, I can honestly tell you that this crazy thought and ambition to make it happen was well worth it. All of my nerves and fears about the move and the internship have been eased by this company, their goals, and the people who work here. I know this will be a summer well spent, at an internship where I learn a lot not only about Marketing, but also the other fields of business at an Information Technology company.

My journey has only begun!
