How the Right Internship Jumpstarts a Successful Career

I’ve always been told college will be the best four years of my life. These words got me through my ‘not so favorite times’ in high school. Three years ago, the much anticipated ‘best time of my life’ was actually a reality. Once I started school, I quickly started to hear, “The next four years will go by before you know it.” Now, I am weeks away from the end of my best years and everyone was sadly right, it goes by way too fast. I’ve tried my best to do everything I could in college. I got involved in clubs, learned a lot, seized every internship opportunity, and had a ton of fun. I’m going into my last year at the University of Delaware really excited not only for school but my future after as well.

An internship begins with an ambitious scholar looking to learn and grow

Before this summer, I had this idea in my head that no one truly loves where they work. I thought it was just something people did to get by in life. I’ve always been the type of person to throw myself into something I love doing, but I could never see myself loving work. My internship this summer at Phenom People completely changed my outlook of life post-graduation.

Post-grad doesn’t have to be as scary as everyone says if you love going to work every day. Students my age are so lucky to live in a time where the unemployment rate is lower than ever and if you want a job, you’ll be able to find one and choose the best option for yourself. This is a luxury not many generations before us have had.

If you find a company that truly cares about their employees, there’s no lack of positivity and hard work in the office. Every person I met working at Phenom People is truly phenomenal. I looked forward to coming to work every day and viewed my internship as so much more than just getting work done. I learned a lot about marketing, time management, working in a team, and the importance of office culture.

Working at Phenom this summer, I’ve learned more about myself and what I want my future to look like. Through my internship, I gained insight into every side of marketing from creative, to content, to social media and its analytics. I even got to explore the sales and HR side of the company. Not only was I able to learn new skills, I was also able to step out of my comfort zone. As a millennial, using social media during all hours of the day, I have always been comfortable using it, but I wanted to expand my skillset. My internship at Phenom allowed me to show off my talents when it came to social media, but also to grow as a marketer in areas where I was less confident.

There was something new to learn at every corner. I never left the office feeling unfulfilled or unimportant to the company. In a fast-paced, growing business, there are new things happening all the time. And while I realize that the environment isn’t for everyone, I find it exciting! I’ve learned how to organize my time so I have the bandwidth for unexpected projects. That is one of the most important things I’ve learned working at a growing business.

As my last days here at Phenom People come to an end, I am overwhelmed by the support I have received these past three months. I not only came out of this summer with so much knowledge but also with networking and friendships. I am so lucky to have worked with interns that have become such great friends to me and coworkers that have become my mentors.

I can only hope that other students have the same amazing experience I had. I hope all my future endeavors are as phenomenal as my internship here was at Phenom People.

Thank you to everyone who made this experience exceptional!
