The digitization of manufacturing and the invention of the World Wide Web is the hallmark of the Digital Age, also known as the Third Industrial Revolution. Thanks to fast-paced technological developments, however, it looks like we are once again on the verge of the next revolution.

Enter, the Fourth Industrial Revolution; a revolution considered to be more technological than industrial. The Fourth Industrial Revolution will build on the potential of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), nanotechnology, renewable energy, quantum computing, and biotechnology to name a few. Consequently, new fields and markets will emerge from these technological innovations.

Like the industrial revolutions that preceded it, the Fourth Industrial Revolution will also be disruptive. The emergence of new markets will require a new set of skills for employment, hereby changing the politics of jobs in the years to come. By 2020, about 5 million jobs are expected to be replaced by automated machines. Likewise, jobs that didn’t exist before will soon be in-demand. This new age will call for a new set of skills for the future workforce to remain competent and productive.
