To shed some light on these pressing questions, we recently sat down with Robert Richardson, HR Tech Strategy Advisor at SAP SuccessFactors, for an illuminating conversation. With a wealth of experience working with over 100 customers annually, Robert Richardson offers invaluable insights into the current state of AI in HR and what the future may hold.

The AI Revolution in HR: A Spectrum of Readiness
What is AI, and how do we use it responsibly? As we look at AI’s impact on HR, it quickly becomes apparent that organizations are at vastly different stages of understanding and implementation. Today, for example, just 6% of workers feel comfortable using AI. About 16% are somewhat comfortable, and about a third are very uncomfortable, per a recent Gallup poll. This gap in understanding can greatly impact the ethical approaches individuals and organizations take as society continues to learn how to interact with AI.
Richardson has seen this firsthand: "The gamut of knowledge is quite wide. The gap in competencies is quite wide, and that means that the concerns are varying across that domain of knowledge."
This current moment offers challenges to organizations looking to help their teams adapt to this new future in ways that are:
Ethical
Uncompromising to company data and candidate privacy
Meanwhile, organizations now have the ability to use generative AI to create personalized communication at scale, as well as skills data and fit scoring to identify best-fit talent with precision. While some organizations are still grappling with the basics of AI, others are pushing the boundaries of what's possible, exploring innovative use cases that could reshape the future of HR.

The Evolution of AI Adoption: A Roadmap to the Future
As organizations continue to adapt to AI’s impact on productivity for talent leaders, it's crucial to understand where we've been and where we're headed. Richardson provides a timeline for AI adoption in HR, offering a roadmap for organizations at every stage of their AI journey:
2022: The year of “WTF" (What’s a transformer?). This was a year of understanding what AI really is.
2023-2024: Years of experimentation and implementation. Organizations are seeing tech companies come out with innovative tools they can explore.
2025: Year of fine-tuning, both from a tech standpoint and business processes standpoint.
2026-2027: Serious productivity gains and normalization of AI use across the board. In the future, using AI will be like using your cell phone: unimaginable how we got along without it.
This timeline provides a framework for understanding the progression of AI adoption and offers reassurance to organizations that may feel like they’re lagging behind. The message is clear: There's still time to join the AI revolution, but the time to start is now.
Balancing AI Adoption and Organizational Hesitancy: A Delicate Dance
As with any transformative technology, AI adoption in HR is met with both excitement and apprehension. While some organizations eagerly embrace AI, others are more hesitant, even banning its use entirely.
But there’s a crucial point not to be missed here: AI is here to stay, and the world is experimenting with this technology. Organizations that try to ignore or suppress it risk falling behind or losing control of how it's used within their ranks. The challenge for HR leaders is to find safe, ethical ways to adopt AI that harness its potential while mitigating risks.
"Do it, or it will be done unto you,” says Richardson. “You cannot put your head in the sand on this topic because you’ll cease to see all the ways it can do harm. You have to find safe ways to adopt these tools."
AI's Impact on Jobs: Reimagining the Role of HR
One of the most pressing concerns surrounding AI in HR is its potential impact on jobs. Will AI replace human recruiters? Richardson offers a nuanced perspective on this complex issue:
"Recruiters are kind of like salespeople, except salespeople sell products and recruiters sell life changes. The bot will never really care about you, but the recruiter will empathize and help guide you through perhaps your next career change in a way that changes your life."
While acknowledging that using AI could lead to some job losses, Richardson emphasizes that the technology is primarily removing repetitive, thankless tasks from recruiters' workloads. This shift allows HR professionals to focus on the high-value, human-centric aspects of their roles that truly make a difference in candidates' lives.
The Future of HR Tech
As we look to the horizon, the potential of AI in HR seems boundless. Richardson is particularly excited about AI's role in personalized learning and development.
"Learning is individualistic. We all think in different ways. Just imagine these tools in the future, whether it's corporate or school, being able to adjust their teaching technique to your unique knowledge base as a human."
Embracing the AI Revolution
The AI revolution in HR is not a distant future — it's happening now. For HR leaders and professionals, the message is simple but urgent: Start learning, start experimenting, and start implementing.
Richardson leaves us with a powerful call to action: "Keep learning. There are so many tools out there today that can help you understand this marketplace. Download Anthropic, ChatGPT, or Perplexity. There are lots of these tools out there, and just ask it about any of these topics. It'll provide you with really sophisticated answers, and you can start learning in that way."
By embracing AI with open minds and a commitment to ethical, human-centric implementation, HR professionals can lead their organizations into a future where technology and humanity work hand in hand to create better workplaces for all.
